From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 15, 1908: “There are some indications that the Vancil murder case may have to be tried again due to the prospects of a hung jury. Apparently jurors in session are badly divided on the verdict about the man accused of poisoning his wife with arsenic. Word is some think the evidence is not sound enough for either conviction or acquittal. : Will Sheriff Woodward get mileage fees for arresting five young men who live in the country but who he arrested last night by telephone? The sheriff planned to go to get the men but a rain fell and so he called them by telephone to read the charges and make the arrests. Each man said he would be in today as asked. They are being charged with disturbing a public meeting.”
