Topeka ? A stretch of Kansas Highway 10 in western Lawrence would be named the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Highway, under a bill discussed Thursday.

State Rep. Tom Holland, D-Baldwin City, said House Bill 2720 would affect a seven-mile stretch to honor the legacy of the slain civil rights leader.

“This area encompasses several scenic areas including the beautiful Clinton Lake area,” Holland told the House Transportation Committee.

“The proposed route reflects Dr. King’s vision for harmony in America,” he said.

The committee took the bill under consideration.

Holland said the idea for the road came from Mark Jones, of Lawrence.

In an interview last year with the Journal-World, Jones and Topeka activist Sonny Scroggins were involved in trying to get portions of roads renamed in several major cities in Kansas in honor of King, who was slain April 4, 1968.
