Commissioner tapped for literacy board

President George W. Bush on Wednesday appointed Kansas Education Commissioner Alexa Posny to the National Institute for Literacy Advisory Board.

The Kansas State Board of Education appointed Posny, of Lawrence, as state commissioner in 2007.

The National Institute for Literacy provides leadership on literacy issues, including the improvement of reading instruction for children, youths and adults. In consultation with the U.S. departments of Education, Labor, and Health and Human Services, the institute serves as a national resource for literacy research, practice and policy.

The advisory board includes 10 members appointed by the president with Senate consent. Posny’s appointment has been sent to the Senate for confirmation.
