KU softball wins UCF tourney title

? Valerie George allowed just four hits in seven shutout innings, and Kansas University collected six runs off six hits in a 6-0 victory over Central Florida in the championship game of the UCF Softball Invitational on Sunday.

Earlier Sunday, the Jayhawks slipped past Illinois State, 4-3 in 10 innings.

KU improve to 5-1, its best opening-weekend record since 2003, when the Jayhawks went 4-0. UCF fell to 3-2.

Juniors Elle Pottorf and Stevie Crisosto each had a pair of RBIs in the title game on one hit a piece. Dougie McCaulley, a fellow junior, also batted in a run for the Jayhawks and led the team with two base hits as she finished with four for the day. Sophomore Amanda Jobe improved her hitting streak to three games with a hit against UCF.

In Sunday’s earlier game, Jobe sent a grounder through the right side of the field to score the winning run against ISU.

Sarah Vertelka (3-0) picked up the victory with 71â3 hitless innings of relief. KU won despite stranding 17 runners.

KU will travel to the UNLV Invitational, which runs Friday through Sunday in Las Vegas.
