Kansas athletes shine at track and field meet

? Kansas University seniors Kate Sultanova and Egor Agafonov and sophomore Jordan Scott each leads the country in his or her respective event after setting meet records for the KU track and field team this weekend at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

Each recorded an NCAA automatic qualifying mark, and Sultanova tied the school record in the women’s pole vault in the premier event.

Sultanova won the pole vault, set the meet record, tied the KU record and matched the NCAA leading height with her vault of 4.30 meters (14 feet, 11â4 inches). The Krasnodar, Russia, native equaled the school record she shared with Amy Linnen.

Scott completed the sweep in the pole vault for the Jayhawks with a career-best and automatic qualifying effort of 5.50 meters (18 feet, 1â2 inches). The Watkinsville, Ga., native’s meet-record height matched Rory Quiller of Binghamton for the nation’s lead in the event.

Agafonov won the men’s weight throw with his NCAA auto-qualifying and meet-record toss of 22.13 meters (72 feet, 71â4 inches). The Togliatti, Russia, native became the first student-athlete in the nation this year to surpass the 22-meter mark.

Meanwhile, Nickesha Anderson once again bettered her school-record time in the 60-meter dash with a fourth-place finish in 7.28 seconds.
