Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 10, 1908: “The Republican Central Committee met Saturday and endorsed William H. Taft for president, W.R. Stubbs for governor and Charles F. Scott for congressman from the Kansas Second District. : A student whose name was withheld from reports was fined $10 in police court this morning for committing an undisclosed nuisance. He is said to be a very decent, upright sort whose offense was slight. : The presidential candidacy of W.H. Taft seems to be gaining momentum everywhere and the local endorsement is part of that growing flood. : The pure food examiners in the state will hereafter weigh packages in grocery stores to see whether they come up in weight to the marks on the label. A good place to begin looking for short weights would be in the packages of creamery butter. : The trial of Ephraim Vancil for the murder of his wife continues and interest in the event seems to be growing by the hour. Poisoning is suspected.”
