KU softball moves to 3-1 after split

? Kansas University’s softball team extended its season-opening winning streak to three games Saturday before falling one game later.

Sophomore Sarah Vertelka (2-0) shut out Illinois State to help KU push its record to 3-0. The Jayhawks tallied six runs off eight hits for a 6-0 victory over the Redbirds during day two of the UCF Invitational.

Vertelka notched her second win in two days, going six innings for the win. The right-handed hurler allowed just four hits while striking out four. Junior Val George pitched the final inning in relief and struck out three consecutive batters after allowing a pair of walks to conserve the victory.

“I am really pleased at what we are getting out of Sarah Vertelka,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said. “She is being smart, she is getting tough outs in tough situations, and she is out there really battling for us.”

Kansas had eight total hits against three Illinois State pitchers.

Junior Val Chapple and freshman Liz Kocon each tallied a pair of RBIs in the contest, while Chapple had three hits in four at-bats on the day.

Freshman Brittany Hile added two hits.

Elle Pottorf, Dougie McCaulley and Stevie Crisosto all had one apiece.

Kansas tallied its first run in the fourth inning.

Chapple got things started with a single through the left side with two outs and was brought home on three straight walks by Illinois State pitcher Amber Smith.

The Jayhawks extended their lead to four with three runs in the top of the fifth. Hile and Chapple recorded back-to-back doubles for the RBIs.

Not satisfied with a 4-0 lead, KU added two more runs in the final inning.

Hile hit her second double of the day and seventh hit of the weekend, and Chapple lined a single up the middle to bring Hile home. Freshman Liz Kocon notched her first collegiate RBI when she brought Chapple in on a double to right.

In Saturday’s second game, KU fell to host Central Florida, 5-2.

Chapple hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to account for KU’s scoring. The homer was Chapple’s first of the season.

In addition to Chapple’s home run, sophomore Amanda Jobe had a pair of hits, while Ally Stanton also had a hit, her first of the season.

KU freshman Allison Clark (1-1) suffered the loss on the mound.
