KU adds final coach

As expected, Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino announced the hiring of Joe Bob Clements to coach the defensive line on Friday.

Mangino is familiar with Clements – he was an assistant coach at Kansas State from 1994-98 while Clements was playing for the Wildcats.

Clements coached at K-State before spending the last two seasons coaching the D-line at San Diego State.

“Joe Bob is defined by his hard work and tenacity,” Mangino said in a statement. “We will be a very sound, technical defensive line with a great deal of toughness.”

Clements will replace Bill Young, KU’s defensive coordinator for six years who also coached the defensive line. Clint Bowen, KU’s safeties coach, was promoted to defensive coordinator last month.

A native Kansan, Clements spent part of his childhood in Lawrence before going to high school in Emporia. He joined the Wildcats as a walk-on in 1994 and eventually became an honorable mention All-Big 12 defensive end.

With Clements’ hiring, KU has no more vacancies on its coaching staff. As of now, the Jayhawks will have two new assistant coaches in ’08 – Clements and wide receivers coach David Beaty.
