From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 7, 1908: “W.R. Stubbs gave out a statement here today denying any deal of any kind between him and Gov. Bailey to withdraw from the race for governor. He says the machine has circulated such rumors and that he looks forward to opposing Bailey. : There is a skating rink opposite the court house with a free skating school for beginners only. The charge for adults is 25 cents. : For the first time in history, Lawrence banks have a clearinghouse association with all five banks represented. This puts them in closer touch so they can work together in cases such as the recent run on banks in the east, where finances have been questionable for some agencies. Local banks came through the crisis in sound shape. : D.H. Young, a bridge contractor who recently located here, wants the Lawrence Committee to help put in a bridge and steel plant to manufacture structural steel and iron and bridge material for shipment all over Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado – wherever sales can be arranged.”
