Legislation that could eventually boost the cost of Lawrence’s water supply passed in a Kansas Senate committee on 9-0 vote. Even though the state attorney general had said the hike was not in line, it appeared higher rates were certain. At issue was the price of water the city drew from Clinton Lake. The city had negotiated for one price, but the state had decided to raise that after the agreement had been made.
