From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 5, 1908: “The special session of this legislature is officially ended after last-minutes quibbling over rules and some horse-play among the senators in Topeka. Most legislators are gone today. : The Atchison Globe has done a piece on William Lewis, 96, its oldest citizen. He recalls watching workmen dig the Erie Canal in New York and has many more amazing memories to recount. : The recent hard freeze here may not have reduced the price of ice for next summer but it has at least made it necessary for the ice trust to hunt a different excuse for high prices.”
