Nittany Lions notch first victory against ranked opponent in 2 years; Memphis still unbeaten

? Penn State’s youngsters passed a stiff test at the free-throw line and got a huge reward.

Stanley Pringle scored 19 points, and Penn State went 16-of-20 from the foul line in the game’s final four minutes to upend No. 8 Michigan State, 85-76, on Saturday night and snap the Spartans’ five-game winning streak.

Talor Battle had 17 points, and David Jackson added nine – all from the free-throw line – as the Nittany Lions scored their first victory over a ranked team in two years.

No wonder fans rushed the court after the final buzzer sounded at the Jordan Center.

“It was crazy, I didn’t know they would do that,” Pringle said. “I didn’t know whether to run or what.”

No. 1 Memphis 70, UTEP 64

Memphis, Tenn. – Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 24 points, and Memphis remained the country’s only undefeated team.

The Tigers (21-0, 7-0 Conference USA) are enjoying their best start ever, topping the 20-win start by the 1985-86 squad. They also extended the nation’s longest home-court winning streak to 44 in the first of a four-game homestand.

Durham, N.C. – DeMarcus Nelson scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half to lead Duke to its ninth straight victory.

No. 5 UCLA 82, Arizona 60

Los Angeles – Freshman Kevin Love had 26 points and 11 rebounds for his 13th double-double, and UCLA routed Arizona for its 20th victory of the season.

The Bruins (20-2, 8-1 Pac-10) built a 20-point halftime lead and cruised on 57 percent field-goal shooting.

No. 6 Georgetown 73, Seton Hall 61

Washington – Jessie Sapp had 17 points, reserve Patrick Ewing Jr. scored 11 of his career-high 16 in the second half, and the Hoyas won their fifth straight.

Roy Hibbert added 16 points and nine rebounds for Georgetown (18-2, 8-1 Big East).

No. 7 Tennessee 76, Mississippi St. 71

Starkville, Miss. – Chris Lofton scored 20 points, JaJuan Smith added 15, and Tennessee turned back a late rally to beat Mississippi State.

The Volunteers (19-2, 6-1 SEC) have won 15 of their last 16 overall and four straight against Mississippi State.

No. 14 Stanford 67, No. 9 Washington St. 65, OT

Pullman, Wash. – Robin Lopez hit a spinning layup with 12 seconds left in overtime to lift the Cardinal to their fifth straight victory.

Washington State had a chance to tie in the closing seconds when Taylor Rochestie took the inbound pass and drove the length of the floor, but his layup bounced off the rim.

No. 15 Xavier 75, La Salle 62

Cincinnati – C.J. Anderson scored 16 points in Xavier’s balanced offense, and the Musketeers overcame a sloppy performance.

Xavier (18-4, 6-1) has won 10 of its last 11 and leads the Atlantic 10.

No. 16 Drake 83, Indiana St. 77

Terre Haute, Ind. – Adam Emmenecker scored a season-high 20 points, and Drake defeated Indiana State for its 20th victory.

Josh Young scored 18 points, and Leonard Houston added 16 for the Bulldogs (20-1, 11-0 Missouri Valley), who won their 19th straight.

No. 17 Marquette 75, Cincinnati 60

Cincinnati – Lazar Hayward scored 19 points, and the Golden Eagles finally picked up a road victory in the Big East.

Marquette (16-4, 6-3) rallied from a nine-point deficit in the first half. Hayward led the way, scoring 14 after the break as Marquette built a 15-point lead and held on.

Connecticut 60, No. 18 Pittsburgh 53

Hartford, Conn. – A.J. Price scored 21 points, and the Huskies closed the game on a 9-2 run for their fifth straight victory, three of them coming against ranked teams.

Jeff Adrien added 14 points for the Huskies, and Austrie had 13.

Freshman DeJuan Blair had 13 points and 13 rebounds, nine offensive, for the Panthers.

No. 19 Vanderbilt 78, Auburn 71

Nashville, Tenn. – A.J. Ogilvy scored 19 points, and the Commodores snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the first time in two weeks.

Frank Tolbert, who scored a career-high 32 points, hit a three-pointer with 2:16 left to make it 72-66, but the Tigers (12-8, 2-5) got no closer.

Arkansas 80, No. 20 Florida 61

Fayetteville, Ark. – Sonny Weems scored 17 points, and the Razorbacks raced to a 25-point halftime lead en route to an easy victory over the Gators.

Gary Ervin added 15 points and six assists for the Razorbacks, who gave coach John Pelphrey a win over his mentor Billy Donovan.

No. 21 Saint Mary’s 86, Portland 49

Moraga, Calif. – Ian O’Leary scored a season-high 20 points, and Saint Mary’s routed Portland in the Gaels’ final tuneup before facing West Coast Conference unbeaten and rival Gonzaga.

South Carolina 80, No. 24 Mississippi 77

Oxford, Miss. – Dominique Archie scored 20 points, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 5.9 seconds left, and South Carolina upset Mississippi .

Devan Downey led the Gamecocks (11-10, 2-5 SEC) with 25 points, and capped the victory with a pair of technical-foul free throws with 1.1 seconds left.
