Baylor smothers KSU

Oklahoma State, Texas A&M also notch victories

Kansas State forward Ashley Sweat tries to shoot over Baylor center Danielle Wilson during the first half of the Bears' victory Saturday in Manhattan.

? While winning a key game, No. 6 Baylor might have lost a key player.

The Lady Bears, clamping a suffocating defense on No. 18 Kansas State, rode a 17-2 second-half surge to a 63-49 victory Saturday for their 13th victory in a row.

Jessica Morrow scored 16 points, and Rachel Allison had 15 for Baylor (20-1, 8-0 Big 12), which is off to the best start in program history.

The win was tempered, however, by an injury to Jhasmin Player.

She scored on a fast break in the first half but went down hard and injured her left knee. Coach Kim Mulkey said an MRI would be performed today on the 5-foot-10 junior, who had been averaging 12.6 points and 6.3 rebounds.

“She is heartbroken,” Mulkey said. “Jhasmin is one of our captains. No one outworks Jhasmin Player. We just wanted to hug her and love on her and say all the good things you can. We were happy that we won, but those tears were from Jhasmin being hurt.”

The loss stopped a 10-game winning streak for the Wildcats (15-6, 7-1), their longest in four years.

No. 21 Oklahoma State 82, Colorado 71

Boulder, Colo. – Andrea Riley scored 30 points and led a second-half surge that sent Oklahoma State past Colorado.

The Cowgirls (17-3, 5-2 Big 12) also got 21 points and 13 rebounds from Shaunte Smith and 14 points from Danielle Green in sending the Buffs (13-8, 2-6) to their sixth loss in seven games since winning 11 straight.

Buffs captain Jackie McFarland scored 21 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and dished eight assists, a career best. Brittany Spears and Aija Putnina each added 14 points for the Buffaloes.

Colorado trailed 58-54 on McFarland’s free throw with 71â2 minutes left, but Riley hit a jumper and a three-pointer from beyond NBA range during a 9-3 spurt that the Cowgirls used to take control of the back-and-forth game.

Texas A&M 63, Texas Tech 46

Lubbock, Texas – Takia Starks scored 22 points, and Texas A&M went on a 22-0 run in the second half of its victory over Texas Tech.

Texas Tech (14-7, 2-5) led by as many as six in the second half and was up 43-39 with 11:50 to play before going scoreless for 10 minutes.

Jordan Murphree led Tech with 12 points.

Morenike Atunrase and Danielle Gant combined for 21 second-half points for A&M (16-6, 4-4).
