Hit-and-run suspect faces felony charge in Osage County

A woman suspected of leading police on a high-speed chase after a fatal hit-and-run incident will be tried in Osage County.

Magistrate Jon Stephen Jones ruled today in Osage County District Court that there was probable cause to try Ramona Morgan on a felony charge of fleeing and attempting to elude police. She also faces several misdemeanor traffic charges.

The ruling came after a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper described the police chase on Sept. 11, 2007. Trooper Todd Brooks identified Morgan as the driver of a pickup truck that he pursued from Overbrook to outside of Scranton. He said speeds reached nearly 90 mph and the driver drove left of center several times. The truck finally stopped after other officers in Osage County used spike sticks to deflate the front tires.

The case is pending and no trial date has been set yet.

Morgan also is charged in Douglas County in the hit-and-run deaths of two highway workers south of Lawrence on U.S. Highway 59. Authorities have said the truck left the scene and was spotted later by the trooper in Osage County. That case will be handled in Douglas County after the Osage County case is completed.
