New Year’s Eve event keeps kids overnight

December 29, 2008

The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department will host an overnight event for children on New Year’s Eve.

Children ages 5 to 12 can ring in the New Year by playing games and participating in other activities. The event will run from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday at Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St.

Children should bring a sleeping bag and pillow.

The New Year’s Eve Overnighter costs $28. The registration deadline is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at any Parks and Recreation facility. Children also can be enrolled online at

For more information on the event, call special events supervisor Duane Peterson at 832-7940.

Well, if you were going to pay a private sitter in your home for an overnight babysitting job, how much would YOU pay?Twelve hours of sitting for $28 comes out to be just a smidge over $2 an hour. Considering that on average, most sitters get paid $7.50 an hour, $28 for the whole night sounds kind of nice to me. I wonder what the child/adult ratio needs to be.

I'd have to say that $28 is a fair price for dealing with someone else's child so that the parents can get wasted.
