From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 25, 1908: Christmas Day brought the end to one of the most profitable shopping and buying seasons on local record. Many have today off work, others will work only part time, until noon. … Judge Smart’s divorce mill was working fast on Dec. 23 and in four cases the marriage bonds were set aside and the divorce asked for was granted to clear the docket as much as possible. Many of the cases had been pending for some time. Abandonment or cruelty were the main causes.”
