Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 24, 1908: “‘No women stenographers for me and no women clerks in the governor’s office while I am chief executive.’ This is the ukase issued by Gov.-elect W.R. Stubbs who is now selecting his office force. ‘Women are the foundation rock upon which our government rests,’ Stubbs said. ‘They are the best creatures on earth. But their place is at home, baking salt-rising bread and the like. They would all be there if I had my way.’ For four years now, there have been no women holding a position in the governor’s office and women have not taken kindly to Gov. Hoch and will not be any more receptive to Gov. Stubbs. … John Collins, a former KU boy, has been pardoned by Gov. E.W. Hoch. He was convicted 10 years ago of having a hand in the killing his father for insurance money but many friends felt the sentence was unjust and have worked ever since for his freedom.”
