Rain, cold lead to slick sidewalks, roads

As rain moves through the area, the cold temperatures and the even colder ground is leading to some slick spots on sidewalks on streets.

The city of Lawrence put out a statement earlier Monday, noting that its crews had been treating streets with a salt-sand mixtures. As the rain accumulates, however, the treatment can be washed away until another pass by city crews.

The city advised drivers to slow down and make sure all windows are clear when driving.

The Kansas Department of Transportation reports that most highways in the area are wet, though south of Baldwin City roads are being classified as “completely snowpacked/ice.”

In Baldwin City, a thin layer of ice is covering most surfaces.
