From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 21, 1908: Fear continues about mad dogs and hydrophobia here and Prof. H.B. Newton of the university has asked Mayor Barker to issue an order that all dogs be tied up. He says is keeping a rifle at his house for defense against possible infected dogs. … The Santa Fe has decided to install a telephone service over all its lines in Kansas to handle train orders and arrange scheduling. Special phones are due here. Telegraphing will still be used for general orders but the phones are expected to help greatly to run a better railroad.”
