University Bridge Club annual Christmas party was Dec. 10 at Alvamar Country Club, with 12 tables playing after a dinner meeting. Hosts were Richard Quinn, club president, and JoAnne Kready.

Blue winners were Paul Jordan, first; Ray Ikenberry, second; George Bocquin, third; Dale Kring, fourth; Willie Stoltenberg, fifth; Dave Gaumer, sixth; Darlene Schneider, seventh; Sadie Deaton, eighth.

Pink winners were Rhetta Jo Noever, first; Ailene Bocquin, second; Jane Golden, third; Mary Kanous, fourth; Bebe Huxtable, fifth; Carolyn Jordan, sixth; Wanda Kring, seventh; Dottie Miller, eighth.

The Knights of Columbus Council 1372 announce the results of the Tootsie Roll drive to benefit those with intellectual disabilities. The event on Oct. 10-12 raised $4,069.45. Of the total amount, $813.89 was donated to the Knights of Columbus State Council which sponsors a Special Olympics basketball event each year in Hays. The remaining balance was split between Cottonwood and ARC of Douglas County.

Barb Bishop, executive director of ARC of Douglas County, and Kari Bentzinger, community relations assistant, were each presented a check for $1,627.78 on Dec. 14.

The Lawrence Women’s Network annual holiday party was Dec. 11 at the home of Betty Markley. Members attending were Janet Horner, Marsha Stevens, Cathy Nunley, Debbie Liddel, Connie Warkins, Vauncele Pearson, Candy Monroe, Megan Poindexter, Julia Rombough, Jeanette Ochs, and Kay Metzger. The event included a white elephant gift exchange and a potluck dinner with members providing side dishes and wine. The organization provided smoked meat.

Candy Monroe, Shawnee, received the 2008 Lawrence Women’s Network Outstanding Career Woman of the Year Award. The award was presented by Cathy Nunley, the 2007 Award recipient. Monroe is the membership co-chairwoman for Lawrence Women’s Network and has been instrumental in the group’s activities and ongoing improvements. LWN commended Monroe for her commitment and dedication to the organization.

The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Dec. 10 was directed by Chris Lane. The North-South winners were Mark Osborn and Bobby Patton, first in A and B; Harry Shaffer and Ed Howard, second in A; Mary Fenlon and Nita Scales, third in A; Marilyn Martin and Clarice Broz, fourth in A, second in B, and first in C; Klee Zaricky and Betty Collier, third in B; and Virginia Johnston and Judy Bevan, second in C.

The East-West winners were Madelyn Jenks and Virginia Seaver, first in A; Shirley Reese and Lois Clark, second in A and first in B; Mona Bell and Carol Bell, third in A, second in B, and first in C; and David Piro and Paul Heitzman, fourth in A.

The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on Dec. 12 was directed by Virginia Seaver. The North-South winners were Harry Shaffer and Grant Sutton, first in A and B; Nita Scales and Mary Fenlon, second in A; Kent McCullough and Ed Howard, third in A; Patricia Lechtenberg and Dick Shaffer, fourth in A, second in B, and first in C; Don Daugherty and Harry Talley, third in B and second in C.

The East-West winners were Ann Thompson and Jolene Andersen, first in A, B and C; Judy Bevan and Shari Krentzel, second in A and B; Klee Zaricky and Sally Taylor, third in A and B; Jeane Landry and Catherine Blumenfeld, fourth in A; Hailong Dao and Craig Huneke, second in C.
