Edna Elder, Linwood, will celebrate her 80th birthday with an open house from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Linwood Community Building, Third and Main streets.

She requests no gifts.

Stacey and Terry Watts, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Luke Alan Watts, born Nov. 18, 2008, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Luke has two brothers, George, 10, and T.J., 7; and a sister, Sarah, 3.

His maternal grandparents are David and Barbara Neff, Lawrence.

His paternal grandparents are Charlie and Mary Ann Watts, Eudora, and Randy and Angie Robertson, Glen Rose, Texas.

His great-grandparents are Troy Watts, Eudora, and Mary Nell Black, St. Augustine, Fla.

More than 200 scholastic chess players from Kansas and Missouri competed at the Cordley School Chess Tournament Dec. 13 at the Kansas Union at Kansas University. Among Lawrence teams, Southwest Junior High School claimed the second place trophy in K-9, while Central Junior High School and Quail Run School garnered third place trophies in K-9 and K-6, respectively. Apramay Mishra, from Sunflower School, won the first place individual trophy in K-6.

Lawrence-area medal winners in K-12 were: Thomas Clark, Free State High School, seventh; Roy Wedge, Lawrence High School, 10th; Aaron Simon, West Junior High School, 15th; and Sam Stephens, Quail Run, 16th.

Rebecca and Eric Wagner, Commerce City, Colo., announce the birth of their daughter, Maggie Rae Wagner, born Dec. 3, 2008, at Platte Valley Medical Center, Brighton, Colo.

Maggie has a brother, Brody, 3, and a sister, Delaney, 1.
