The state unemployment rate for November increased to 4.8 percent, up from 4.4 percent the previous month and 3.8 percent last November, the Kansas Department of Labor reported Friday.

The statewide jobless rate remained below the national rate, which increased to 6.5 percent.

In Kansas, major job sectors, such as construction, manufacturing, trade, transportation and utilities, reported job losses, while government, education, health, professional, business and technical services reported gains.

The unemployment rate in Douglas County was 4.1 percent for November, up from 3.9 percent in October and 3.3 percent in November 2007.

Statewide, the Topeka, Wichita and Kansas City areas lost 3,900 jobs over the year, while there was a gain of 11,200 jobs in the rest of the state, the Labor Department said.

“This indicates Kansas employment growth has recently relied considerably on gains in the balance of the state,” said labor analyst Tyler Tenbrink.
