Networks begin long winter’s nap

Christmas is just a week off, and New Year’s a half-month away, but 2008 is pretty much over as far as the networks are concerned. With two exceptions, all of tonight’s offerings are in reruns.

Regis Philbin returns to host “Million Dollar Password” (7 p.m., CBS) the revamped version of the classic game show first introduced last summer.

Game shows are divided into two categories: those that allow ordinary folks to make money and those that feature rich Hollywood stars playing for charity. The first might have more appeal in these straightened times, but in its wisdom, CBS and “Password” opt for the second.

Tonight’s players include William Shatner, star of the recently departed “Boston Legal” and host of his own talk show, “Raw Nerve” on the Biography Channel. Aisha Tyler (“CSI,” “Ghost Whisperer”) also appears. “Password” will feature reality show hosts Julie Chen (“Big Brother”) and Phil Keoghan (“Amazing Race”) this coming Sunday and original “Password” star Betty White and host Adam Carolla on Dec. 28.

• The feel-good reality series “Secret Millionaire” (7 p.m., Fox) wraps up its short season when a Utah tycoon honors unsung Vegas heroes.

• Faith Hill performs songs from her new Christmas album “Joy to the World” (9 p.m., PBS, check local listings) featuring a 31-person orchestra under the direction of conductor David Campbell as well as a nine-person choir.

• “Secrets of the Kung Fu Temple” (9 p.m., National Geographic) looks at the Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of the celebrated martial art and home to Zen Buddhism. We learn how the temple has been embattled, destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries, surviving warlords and the ravages of the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s.

“Secrets” looks at the ways the Temple and its “management” attempt to thrive in the 21st century.
