Guards propel UTEP past TTech

UTEP 96, Texas Tech 78

El Paso, Texas — Stefon Jackson and Randy Culpepper could not be stopped as the two guards combined for 45 points in the UTEP victory on Wednesday night.

Jackson scored 28 points on 8-of-16 shooting and Culpepper added 27 on an 8-of-18 night. Starting forward Arnett Moultrie added 15 for UTEP (5-4). Julyan Stone had 11 rebounds for the Miners.

John Roberson led Texas Tech (7-3) with 33 points and nine assists, but he and Damir Suljagic were the only Red Raiders to score in double figures. Suljagic scored 10 points and had eight rebounds.

Oklahoma State 104, Mercer 74

Stillwater, Okla. — James Anderson led six players in double figures with 20 points.

Oklahoma State (7-3) hadn’t played at Gallagher-Iba Arena since Nov. 23 after opening the season with four home games. Anderson, Obi Muonelo (19), Terrel Harris (18), Keiton Page (13), Byron Eaton (12) and Malcoln Kirkland (10) each scored in double figures for the Cowboys.

The game was a homecoming of sorts for Mercer head coach Bob Hoffman, an Oklahoma native who coached the women’s team at Southern Nazarene and the men’s squad at Oklahoma Baptist before working as an assistant at Oklahoma.

Texas A&M 66, SMU 56

College Station, Texas — Josh Carter scored 14 points, Bryan Davis grabbed 11 rebounds and Texas A&M defeated SMU for the Aggies’ fifth straight victory.

A 3-pointer by Carter, a steal and a layup by Carter and two inside baskets by David Loubeau gave A&M a 50-42 lead only two minutes after SMU had pulled to within one at 41-40 with 11:09 left. SMU (3-5) fought its way back into the game, but a 3-pointer by B.J. Holmes gave the Aggies a 62-51 lead with 1:39 left.

Robert Nyakundi led SMU with 18 points.

He hit two three-pointers as the Mustangs took an early 8-2 lead, but the Aggies (9-1) came back and led 37-27 at the half.
