More snow, cold on way
Snow is expected to accompany freezing temperatures today.
“Basically we’re bracing ourselves for this winter push,” said Matt Elwell, 6News chief meteorologist.
Forecasters are predicting that from 1 to 3 inches will fall by this afternoon. Elwell said snow could begin to fall as early as 4 a.m.
Weather models predict heavier amounts north of Interstate 70, but because Lawrence is on that dividing line, drivers should be cautious on the roads today, said Mark Thiel, Lawrence’s assistant public works director.
City crews will report to work at 4 a.m. to try to begin clearing arterial streets, including bus routes and areas near hospitals and fire stations.
Today’s high temperature is expected to reach 22 degrees, but people who are traveling should pack emergency clothing and blankets just in case they have problems, Thiel said.
The colder temperatures — because of a blast of Arctic air that arrived Sunday — seem to be here to stay for a while. On Thursday, the National Weather Service predicts a high of 37 degrees.
“I don’t see this warming up until we get into the middle of next week, before we see any chance of it warming significantly,” Elwell said.
