’Momma’s Boys’: Oedipus revisited

Take three bachelors and their meddling, smothering mothers and add 32 single women with low self-esteem and you have the ingredients for “Momma’s Boys” (9 p.m., NBC), a new relationship/reality series produced by Ryan Seacrest. The guys are out to find a love connection, but only one that Mom will approve.

“Boys” quickly crosses the fine line separating cringe-worthy and downright creepy, and the uncomfortable moments never let up. The mothers are the “stars” here. One — let’s call her Inappropriate Touching Mom — continually hugs her shirtless 20-something son during an introductory video. Another, Ethnic Stereotype Mom, reels off more Yiddish-isms than Mike Myers in a Linda Richman Coffee Talk routine. The third who shall forever be known as Bigot Mom more than steals the show. Speaking in a flat Midwestern accent that sounds like part of a bit in a “Blues Brothers” movie, she matter-of-factly states that there is no way her son, Bobo, or Jojo (or some such unfortunate and IQ-reducing name), will date any girls who happen to be black, Asian, Jewish or non-Catholic. “No mixing” is her edict.

Bigot Mom’s video sends the gaggle of barely covered worthies into a paroxysm of head-rolling and finger-waving outrage. I’m no expert on these things, but this group appears to have a higher bimbo quotient than your average “Bachelor.” Two of the 32 contestants have appeared in Playboy and Penthouse, and it says something when these “models” seem positively demure in comparison with their more craven competition.

Every bevy of beauties has its standout, and tonight’s is an offbeat and feral flower child who appears to have been raised by Snow White and her forest companions. While the other girls display their ample decolletage and sip Mai Tais poolside, our little heroine is shown cleaning up after them and furiously washing the dishes. It’s as if she had cast herself as the downtrodden Cinderella in a McMansion filled with evil stepsisters. Is this madness or “strategy”? And if so, will it win the hearts of a Lothario, and more important, the woman who bore him? You’ll just have to watch “Momma’s Boys” to find out.
