Commuter forecast: Between Topeka and Lawrence

Lisa Callahan, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Turnpike Authority, said that the entire stretch from Topeka to Lawrence to Kansas City is snowpacked.

“The roadway has been treated,” she said. “We’re urging caution, but it’s open and there’s traffic out there.”

Kim Qualls, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Transportation, said that even reasonably clear highways were starting to see problems, especially in the Topeka area.

“We’re getting some refreezing,” she said. “A refreezing rain came through. … The slightest mist, or that freezing mist settles down and it hits that pavement that’s cold, and you’ve got ice that’s occurring.”

Bottom line: “You’ve got to be careful,” Qualls said.

A rundown:

• U.S. Highway 40: Like other two-lane highways, look for much of U.S. 40 to be snowpacked.. Slow-moving traffic.

• U.S. Highway 24: Same thing, Qualls said. Snowpacked conditions. Slow-moving traffic.
