Fire crews investigating fire at south Lawrence home

A duplex in south Lawrence sustained about $20,000 in damage after an accidental chimney fire around noon Monday.

Lawrence Douglas County Fire and Medical Division Chief Eve Tolefree said people were home in the 2600 block of Jordan Lane when fire broke out at 11:50 a.m., but no injuries were reported.

Firefighters cited frigid temperatures in asking for additional units and in case the fire spread to the attic. But they had it under control in the chimney just after 12:30 p.m., Tolefree said. Beyond saying the fire was accidental, fire investigators did not list a specific cause.

The duplex is about three blocks south of the Clinton Parkway-Kasold Drive intersection. The Douglas County appraiser’s Web site lists the property’s value at $131,620.

Jane Blocher, executive director of the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross, said the adults living there declined assistance because the residents have other places to stay.

“They wanted to save (Red Cross services) for somebody who needed it more than they did,” Blocher said.
