LHS wrestler places second

? Three Lawrence High wrestlers advanced out of pool play Saturday at the Eudora Tournament of Champions, and one advanced to the finals.

Blake Greenfield advanced to the 145-pound championship match, but lost to Mill Valley’s James Mullin. It was the only match that Greenfield lost over the two-day tournament.

“I just couldn’t get a grip on him,” Greenfield said.

Greenfield has been battling a leg injury and hasn’t had much practice time this season.

“It took a toll at the end,” he said.

Teammates Levi Flohrschutz and Dustin Walthall also advanced out of pool play. Flohrschutz finished sixth in the 135-pound weight class, and Walthall finished in sixth in the 171-pound class.

Free State’s Ammon Austin was the Firebirds’ lone wrestler to advance out of pool play. He finished the tournament in third place, competing in the 285-pound weight class.

Eudora had five wrestlers advance out of pool play. Boomer Mays came in third overall in the 215-pound weight class, and Caleb Clayton-Molby finished fourth in the 189-pound weight class.

Baldwin’s Alan Callahan took first place at 112-pounds, and teammate Andy Thurlow took third in the 135-pound category.

As a team, Lansing finished first, followed by Chanute and Mill Valley. Baldwin finished seventh, Tonganoxie came in 10th, Eudora finished 13th, Lawrence High came in 18th, and Free State finished last at 24th.
