Temperatures this weekend should be pleasant for a Kansas December, but next week is expected to begin rudely with a cold front and a significant drop in temperature.

Forecasters predict a high temperature of 54 on Sunday that could drop to an overnight low of 16 degrees into early Monday with some snow.

“It’s not atypical, but it definitely catches your attention,” said Matt Elwell, 6News chief meteorologist.

Two competing systems are headed this way. Elwell said the first one is blowing up warm air from the Gulf of Mexico. However, with the jet stream fluctuating this time of year, cold air from the north will quickly sweep in and crash the party.

It could snow 1 to 2 inches by Monday morning, Elwell said. Then another inch could fall on Tuesday. Strong winds also might take some of that comfort away today and Sunday, Elwell said.

But a major concern will be the steep drop in temperature at the end of the week. The freeze within hours could spell trouble for pipes in your home. Plumbers suggest making sure you have disconnected your garden hose from the house to keep it from freezing and bursting your pipes.

Also, open up cupboards below your sink if it’s on an exterior wall to keep warm air flowing to it. Howard Kastl, general manager for Kastl Plumbing in Lawrence, also recommended checking areas where cold air could seep into the house, including the dryer vent.

“When it’s really windy, that’s when you have a lot of problems,” Kastl said.
