Bankruptcy judge to take appellate seat

Judge Janice Miller Karlin, a bankruptcy judge for the federal district of Kansas and a Lawrence resident, has been appointed to the United States Bankruptcy Appellate Panel of the Tenth Circuit.

Before her appointment as a bankruptcy judge in 2002, Karlin was an assistant U.S. attorney for 22 years who did civil litigation and was in charge of the Kansas City, Kan., office.

Karlin is a member of numerous bankruptcy associations and committees and has contributed chapters to practice manuals on bankruptcy law and civil procedure.

She also lectures, including giving Credit Abuse Resistance Education presentations to high school students.

The chief judge of the circuit appoints appellate panel judges.

Criteria includes a bankruptcy judge’s willingness to serve and performance.

Karlin earned undergraduate and law degrees from Kansas University and serves on the board of governors for the KU Law Alumni Society.

She is married to Lawrence attorney Calvin Karlin of the Barber Emerson L.C. Law Firm.
