The Lawrence school board was due to consider action to increase graduation requirements at the local high school level by the time the Class of 1988 reached graduation.

Seven Lawrence-area plats were included on the state’s list of 201 potentially hazardous waste storage sites. But local and state officials downplayed the chance for contamination from such locales. Heading the list were the unused Callery Chemical Co. site and the Sunflower Ordnance Works.
