The Lawrence Humane Society has nearly a dozen adult dogs that the state rescued last week from a southeast Kansas breeder.

Animal welfare director Jeaneen Hercha said the Lawrence shelter received the smaller dogs last Friday.

The Lawrence shelter initially took in about two dozen more of the dogs, but the state placed those animals in other shelters. Hercha said it would be a couple of weeks before staff members add the remaining dogs to an adoption waiting list. They still must be groomed, fed better and tested for heartworms.

The Kansas Animal Health Department placed nearly 100 of the dogs at facilities across the state after the breeder could not sell them.

Debra Duncan, director of the state’s animal facilities inspection program, said the economy appears to be affecting several smaller-size Kansas breeders and their operations.
