Gonzaga ends losing streak versus WSU

No. 4 Gonzaga 74, Washington St. 52

Pullman, Wash. — Josh Heytvelt scored 22 points, Austin Daye added 14, and Jeremy Pargo had 11 for the Bulldogs (7-0), who ended a two-game losing streak to their regional rival.

Washington State (6-3) was in the game in the first half, when it managed to impose a slow pace of play. But the Cougars fell apart early in the second half when Gonzaga scored 15 straight points.

Aron Baynes and DeAngelo Casto had 10 points apiece to lead Washington State.

All three of Washington State’s losses have been to ranked teams, including Pittsburgh and Baylor. The Cougars fell to 1-73 all-time against top-five teams. The lone victory came against Oregon State in 1980.

No. 10 Xavier 78, Ohio 56

Cincinnati — Freshman point guard Terrell Holloway returned from a stress fracture in his foot and put the sizzle back into Xavier’s offense, helping the Musketeers stay unbeaten with a victory over Ohio.

Xavier (8-0) matched the second-best start in its history — the 1992-93 team opened the same way. The school record is a 10-0 start by the 1996-97 team.

Even though the record remained perfect, the Musketeers have had problems on offense in their last two games without Holloway, their quickest ball handler, best free-throw shooter and flashiest playmaker. He was back in form during the last five minutes of the first half, leading an 18-2 run that left Ohio (4-4) down and out.

C.J. Anderson scored a career-high 22 points for Xavier.
