Veritas swept in openers

? Veritas Christian School’s girls basketball team took an early lead and hung around until halftime, but single basks in each the third and fourth quarters doomed the Eagles to a 39-23 setback to Northland Christian in their season opener Friday.

Veritas took an 8-7 lead in the first quarter and trailed only 20-19 at halftime, but scored just five points after intermission.

“We tired,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “Our legs just wore out. But we won’t hang our heads.”

Taelyr Shelton, Kaylie Farley and Becky Finger each scored five points for Veritas.

Northland Christian boys 45, Veritas 35

Jeremiah Johnson scored 10 points, and John Hicks added eight in a losing cause. Veritas (0-1) will travel Tuesday to the Goessel Invitational.
