Columbia Police News Release ( .PDF )

Say what you will about the city of Columbia, Mo., but at least it has a chief of police with a sense of humor.

Capt. Tom Dresner, interim police chief of the Columbia Police Department, put together a press release on Saturday announcing that he intended to issue warrants for the arrest of the entire Jayhawk football team for robbery following Saturday’s football victory over his Tigers.

The release, addressed to Lawrence Police Chief Ron Olin, said the department’s Major Crimes Unit is preparing to carry warrants to the county attorney.

“Your gang of desperadoes led by Todd Reesing and Kerry Meier will be behind bars soon enough,” the release said.

In a phone interview Monday, despite tough questions about the lack of evidence for the charges, Dresner held firm.

“It was a robbery in plain daylight,” he said, although he later admitted that perhaps the Tigers played some role in the defeat, blaming “our defense not covering a guy who’d gotten like a thousand receptions that day.”

Dresner said he’s not confident the charges will hold up before a jury because, among other things, there’s a lack of jail space to accommodate the entire KU team.

Lawrence Mayor Mike Dever responded to the charges, noting he didn’t see much evidence after having watched the last 10 minutes of the game about 30 times over the weekend.

“I think there needs to be a warrant against the entire MU football team for impersonating a top 10 team,” Dever said.

Dresner said he came up with the idea of submitting the release after watching the football game Saturday.

“It’s fun to do, and in our business, we don’t get to laugh enough,” he said.

At least someone in Columbia has a sense of humor and can put aside the "Border War" hatred for a short while anyway.

Fraud is the crime here. 'Defrauding the BCS' is the charge. Slavers spanked, names taken, sent home. Next. . .

There is nothing about this that is funny.

Only robbery here is from the merchants of Columbia and Lawrence. Isn't that correct Lew.

I'm with OonlyBonly. I thought this was pretty funny. But I'm sure the boo birds will be coming out in force, talking about wasted tax dollars, etc., etc.

At least this guy has a better sense of humor than the Mizzou police chief who arrested KU fans for cheering on KU in Columbia:http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2005/dec...

This made the front page of the ljworld.com? This is humrous, but it certainly doesn't deserve to be the headline. Come on. Were you people hurting for news or something?

invictus (Anonymous) says… The Lawrence Chief of Police couldn’t joke about MU players in this manner, because half of them really do have warrants out for their arrest.===================Please name only 3...or just one...or are you just shooting off your mouth? It's unfortunate that when some people try to display a sense of humor, congratulating the winning team, that others (like you), resort to childish, immature comments. This is what is wrong with sports today. Not enough people like the police chief, and too many like you.

MUFan, your team lost. Get over it. Please stop trolling the LJW boards, as your act got tired a long time ago. And regarding your implication that people need to get a sense of humor -- you might need to, er ... well, here:http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/irony

This was done in good taste and harmless. Give the guy some credit for being a good sport when his team lost!! Dever didn't blast them, he was firing back in god fun also. Some of you took this way too personal. It was funny.Go Hawks!!

I can't believe the lack of a sense of humor this community has.

bjfisher (Anonymous) says… Anytime Missouri takes the dive, it's a good day. I can't wait for the OU/Missouri game. OU is going to knock the &*(%$#!@_+)(&”? out of Missouri!!!! They won't be calling for warrants………………they'll be calling for ambulances!!!!!!lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!===================================Of course you can't wait for the OU/MU game, because KU is not playing in it. I too agree though, that OU will win. However, it's like the NFL Superbowl...better to be in the game and lose, than to be watching it on TV.

Even if they wanted too arrest the whole team; they could not catch them; as they are too fast; as proven on the field...........go KU;; hoorah........................

i thought it was pretty funny, some people need to have their funny bone or chill out meds adjusted. i would rather see this occasionally then shootings, the stock market or any of that depressing stuff.

"some people need to have their funny bone or chill out meds adjusted."I think it's pretty clear that some people just lack funny bones. Perhaps they had them surgically removed as children by puritanical parents, to keep them from the dangers of fun.

I agree, have a laugh. Newsworthy? Why not? Beats the heck out of all the depressing, anti this and that going on. So, for those of you who don't like it, fine. But let the rest of us enjoy a good laugh.

I saw this as a humorous contrast to the incident in Columbia a couple of years back where some KU fans were ejected [and arrested?] for display of what the MU campus police deemed an inappropriate banner in the stands at a MU basketball game. And how about that picture of the MU fan displaying "Burn Lawrence...Quantrill was right.." signs that ran in the J-W? Not to mention the tasteless anti-MU tee shirts that are beneath KU's dignity. We get too hyped up and serious over these things, a little tongue-in-cheek humor from the Columbia PD is all too welcome. This is one of the greatest intercollegiate rivalries in the US, not because it's so old, but because it's so even. They win one year, we win the next. Always treasure a win over MU as a respected opponent, I'm sure there'll be two good, tough BB games to come. Good luck against OU, by the way, I cheer for the tiggers and 'cats whenever they're not playing KU. The civil war ended in 1865, time to have fun and put that behind us. Get a grip! '67 grad.

“I think there needs to be a warrant against the entire MU football team for impersonating a top 10 team,” Dever said.In all honesty, KU has done fairly well at this for the last two seasons also! Cheer up! KU will get a decent bowl bid. If you don't play in the Big XII Championship, you can't lose an extra game!I for one will be glad when Dever is out of office.

Anytime KU wins, it's a good day.Anytime MU looses, it's a good day.Anytime KU beats MU, its a GREAT day! That being said, I think the article was funny! Good, clean fun on both sides. Both sides showed a sense of humor that, in their jobs, isn't something that gets to happen very often. If you are going to get your nose out of joint over this, get over yourself!
