Lawrence police tase and arrest 54-year-old Lawrence man downtown

August 30, 2008

Lawrence police tased a 54-year-old Lawrence man in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street on Saturday afternoon after he refused arrest. According to Sgt. Dave Hubbel, the man was acting in a disorderly manner about 1:50 p.m. downtown, swearing and screaming. When an officer responded to the scene, he realized the man already had two warrants for his arrest, Hubbel said. When the officer attempted to arrest the man, the man tried to fight the officer. Several officers responded to the scene, and the man was tased and arrested.

some of the citizens of lawrence do not realize how many mentally ill people the police have to deal with downtown. don't blame the police for doing theirjob.---Chuggy,yes we do know. and, it is a shame. Some of the mentally ill "homeless" attracted to our city by the "open shelter." now, we have no info on this guy, for all we know, he might've been an otherwise upstanding citizen of lawrence, just running on E85! Joe D, not a bad guess. none of my comments should have been interpretted as criticizing the PD. this is in the paper, but there's several other occassions about every day. and, PD officers are risking themselves as they face these. thanks officers.

I'm surprised no one asked if the police officers were originally from Topeka or KCK!

more_cowbell 9 years, 8 months ago

He was probably ranting about excessive city taxes and DLI fees for businesses, telling people to go spend their money elsewhere...Or really angry over not being able to smoke inside a bar...BZZZZT.

Ban Tazers, we don't live in nazi germany. cops get off on using tazers.

somebodynew 9 years, 8 months ago

If one would care to check the site, it was not Joe D. (I don't think I have ever seen him in a state needing to be tazed - except of course when I almost ran over him on his bike as he pulled out in front of me without stopping. But that was just being pi***d for a second.)It was actually Stevie Bell, and I can understand why they would have to taze him. Poor guy really needs help he is not getting.

instead of Last Callmaybe Last TaZe ?

fastwalker 9 years, 8 months ago

you all joke about being tazed. do you people know that folks have died from being tazed? look it up, before you're tazed yourself, for no reason, by out of control police!

bearded_gnome 9 years, 8 months ago

FW,there's a lot of hysteria about deaths from tasing. however, frequently those people were found to have high doses of drugs/E85 in their systems. others had serious preexisting health concerns. so, by your quote, you'd prefer that the PD simply gun 'em down. that'd protect everybody just as well, and protect the officers who, by the way, put their lives at risk, even for people who call them fascists, "out of control" etc. They don't get to choose whom they protect. And, just what do you base your asertion on, that cops get off on tasing? do you know that part of their tasing training is to be tased themselves? oh, guess that was left out of your nutty website information. though there's a lot of hysteria, overwhelmingly tasers are working well and actually preventing serious injury and death. ***FW:Ban Tazers, we don't live in nazi germany. cops get off on using tazers.

Um, I will be 54 this year. Maybe we should all type in caps so I CAN HEAR (written in all caps but probably not printed this way)!!! I'm not elderly.....

brother_cumulus 9 years, 8 months ago

They should go on a tazing rampage and clean out all of the dirty old creeps downtown. Keep tazing them until they run across the river to North Lawrence so they can be locked up in a cage over there!

bearded_gnome 9 years, 8 months ago

unfortunately FW, your comments about the police make it pretty obvious what you think about them. btw, I'm one of those people with a preexisting condition, I know tazing has more risk to me than to your average guy on the street; however, I'm not prone to be drunk/disorderly/abusive/violent/threat to others/threatening/danger to myself. if you don't want the Tazer to be used, you are saying we should go back to the days when the most effective way to stop such a person is with a bullet, the Tazer is one of the new nonlethal technologies. and for most people it truly is nonlethal. but if you're full of PCP, you're gonna be a real menace to yourself and others. tazing you might kill you with all that angeldust in your system; is that the officer's fault? he or she can't run a drug screen on you in real time in the midst of a highly dangerous situation. no, I don't think people should be tazed to death. but I do know there's sophisticated training the officers have to have tu use them. and, your comments show an intense antipolice bias, so if it weren't the Tazar, maybe in years past, it was the nightstick? remember, when you're in an emergency, the first on your scene will be a police officer. that officer steps in, lacking a lot of information that might be important to protecting your life, or his or hers. so, can you put a sign on your house that says "no police need bother responding to this address?" that way, when they're in a dangerous situation, they only have to look at what's in front of them, and they won't have to worry about being stabbed in the back. ***yeah Gootsie! maybe we need to have the ljworld initiate a special webpage font for those aged 54 and above? maybe special colors? I thought the ref to 54 and senior citizen was funny too.

doc1 9 years, 8 months ago

fastwalker. There are way few deaths and injuries suffered by someone being tazed than someone fighting with the cops. Why don't you do some research instead of pulling out this kneejerk anti cop/tazer stuff.

fastwalker 9 years, 8 months ago

bearded gnome, it's not polite to infer what you think i'd prefer. in actuality, i'd prefer if the public servants sworn to protect me didn't have the right to taze a citizen to death.judging by the other comments, you could infer that lawrence is home to people that lack compassion and any idea of social justice. but i prefer not to infer.

A space before a question mark, coltrane ?Interesting, but too cool.
