From the Lawrence Daily World of Aug. 28, 1908: “The Republican Party in Kansas today is in better shape than it has ever been in our history. : Democratic presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan passed through Lawrence on the Rock Island this noon, heading for a major appearance in Topeka. The local train was late and there was nobody at the depot to greet Bryan, even though many Democrats plan to be in Topeka to hear him tonight.”
