St. Petersburg, Fla. – Matt Garza and two relievers combined on a six-hitter, and Carlos Pena homered to lead AL East-leading Tampa Bay past Toronto on Wednesday.

Garza (11-7) allowed six hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 72â3 innings. Dan Wheeler pitched the ninth for his ninth save.

Pena homered in the fourth, his 27th of the season and sixth over his past 13 games.

Blue Jays rookie David Purcey gave up five hits and struck out a career-high 11 in eight innings for his first career complete game. He struck out 10 and allowed three hits – two by Pena, including the homer – in the first five innings.

Red Sox 11, Yankees 3

New York – Jason Bay drove in four runs, and Dustin Pedroia hit a grand slam for Boston.

Pedroia’s first career slam capped a seven-run eighth inning, and New York dropped seven games behind Boston, which leads the AL wild-card race by 21â2 games over Minnesota.

Orioles 11, White Sox 3

Baltimore – Brian Roberts had three RBIs as Baltimore ended a five-game losing streak. Roberts gave the Orioles the lead for good with a two-run single in the second, then drove in a run with his AL-leading 46th double in the fourth.

Twins 6, Mariners 5

Seattle – Denard Span drove in two runs and threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the bottom of the eighth as Minnesota snapped a four-game losing streak.

Indians 9, Tigers 7

Detroit – Kelly Shoppach homered and drove in three runs, and Shin-Soo Choo hit a home run to lift Cleveland to its 10th straight victory.

Athletics 6, Angels 5

Anaheim, Calif. – Emil Brown homered and drove in three runs, and Rajai Davis had a career-high four hits.
