The extreme heat had forced Lawrence public school officials to adopt an emergency policy. That meant that school would start earlier in the day and end earlier to try to beat the peak heat.

Officials of Lawrence’s Cooperative Farm Chemicals Assn. plant announced they were shutting down all fertilizer production, laying off 60 employees and transferring others to lower-paying jobs with the organization.

The Downtown Lawrence Assn. board of directors had sent questionnaires to its individual members to find out what they thought about plans to build a downtown shopping center. Bob Schumm was DLA president.
