Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World of Aug. 26, 1908: “There still are many here who do not understand the laws for voter registration and it would appear many could be locked out of elections in November for being improperly registered. Good citizens should check on their status. : It appears the new Springfield rifles issued to Kansas National Guard units last spring have defects that must be corrected. : Word is that the banks of New York are glutted with money and that there is a surplus of gold because of the general prosperity in the nation. : Topeka is planning a big Democratic celebration for a visit by William Jennings Bryan, the party’s candidate for president. A great crowd is expected at the fairgrounds. : South Carolina reportedly is being swept by the worst flood the country has seen since 1840 and at least 40 have been drowned to date.”
