County approves road extension

County commissioners Monday in a 2-1 vote gave final approval for a rural resident to expand a road in the Lecompton township.

Commissioners Bob Johnson and Jere McElhaney voted to allow the half-mile extension of East 400 Road about 15 miles northwest of Lawrence. Resident Bob Treanor has offered to pay the estimated $48,000 price tag to provide access to landlocked property.

Treanor wants to market his land for residential development. The county would have to maintain the road, estimated to cost $1,515 annually.

Commissioner Charles Jones again voted against the extension. He has said growth should be limited to existing infrastructure.

The issue also gave commissioners a chance to discuss their criteria on land-use decisions. Commissioners said the regulations are meant to provide objective criteria, such as economic viability and connectivity to existing roads.
