American League Roundup: Sizemore joins 30-30 club

Cleveland's Grady Sizemore, center, celebrates with Shin-Soo Choo (17) and Jamie Carroll after the Tigers' 4-3 victory over the Tigers. Sizemore had two homers and joined the 30-30 club - 30 homers and 30 stolen bases in a season - Monday in Detroit.

Indians 4, Tigers 3

Detroit – Grady Sizemore homered twice to join the 30-30 club, and Franklin Gutierrez hit a 10th-inning home run to help Cleveland win its eighth straight.

Sizemore homered on the game’s second pitch and became the second Indians player to have at least 30 homers and 30 stolen bases in a season. Joe Carter also accomplished the feat with Cleveland in 1987. Sizemore is the 14th American League player to join the 30-30 club, and first since Alfonso Soriano did it for Texas in 2005.

Gutierrez hit the second pitch thrown by reliever Gary Glover (1-3) into the left-field stands to break a 3-3 tie, and Jensen Lewis worked the bottom of the inning to earn his seventh save in eight chances.

Sizemore, who has 34 steals, added his 31st homer in his next at-bat.

White Sox 4, Orioles 3

Baltimore – Jim Thome hit his 535th home run to gain sole possession of 15th place on the career list, and Chicago beat Baltimore after losing the completion of a game suspended by rain.

Thome’s 28th homer of the season gave the White Sox a 4-3 lead in the sixth. The drive, off Baltimore rookie Chris Waters (2-1), moved Chicago’s designated hitter past Jimmie Foxx and put him within one of Mickey Mantle on baseball’s home run chart.

Athletics 2, Angels 1

Anaheim, Calif. – Dallas Braden pitched seven masterful innings, Daric Barton homered, and Oakland beat AL West-leading Los Angeles.

Braden (4-3) allowed a run and seven hits without recording a strikeout or walk. The 25-year-old left-hander, who made his first nine appearances this season in relief before going to Triple-A Sacramento, is 3-3 in seven outings since being inserted back into the rotation on July 22.

Brad Ziegler followed Joey Devine out of the bullpen and pitched a hitless ninth inning for his fifth save in five chances. The rookie right-hander has allowed only two runs in 45 innings.

Jered Weaver (10-10) allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings and struck out eight. One of the runs against him came on his second wild pitch of the season.

Mariners 4, Twins 2, 11 innings

Seattle – Adrian Beltre homered off Jesse Crain in the bottom of the 11th inning, and Seattle kept Minnesota out of first place in the AL Central.

With one out in the 11th, Crain (5-4) walked Raul Ibanez on a full count. Then Beltre drilled a low, first-pitch fastball over the left-field fence to give Seattle the victory.

Joe Nathan blew his fourth save in 38 chances in the ninth, when Beltre scored after a leadoff double.
