American League Roundup: Rays rally past White Sox

Rays 5, White Sox 3

Chicago – Carlos Pena’s two-run single capped a four-run eighth inning, and surging Tampa Bay increased its AL East lead by rallying past Chicago.

Pena’s bases-loaded single off Matt Thornton broke a 3-all tie and sent Tampa Bay to its 11th win in 14 games. The surprising Rays, who keep winning despite injuries to Evan Longoria, Carl Crawford and Troy Percival, moved 51â2 games ahead of second-place Boston.

Angels 7, Twins 5

Anaheim, Calif. – Mark Teixeira went 3-for-3 with a home run, and Francisco Rodriguez closed out another strong bullpen performance, lifting Los Angeles past Minnesota and ending the Twins’ four-game winning streak. Rodriguez earned his major league-leading 49th save.

Indians 8, Rangers 7

Arlington, Texas – Pinch-hitter Jamey Carroll singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and Cleveland rallied from a six-run deficit to win its sixth straight game.

Blue Jays 11, Red Sox 0

Toronto – Vernon Wells hit two home runs, Marco Scutaro added a solo shot, and Toronto roughed up Jon Lester.

Wells went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and scored four times to back Jesse Litsch’s strong outing. He hit a two-run shot off Lester in the first inning and a solo drive in the fifth for his team-leading 12th homer. It was Wells’ first multihomer game this season.

Yankees 5, Orioles 3

Baltimore – Carl Pavano hung around long enough to pick up the win in New York’s victory over Baltimore. Pitching in the major leagues for the first time since April 2007, Pavano (1-0) allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings. The right-hander walked one, hit two batters and struck out five in his 91-pitch effort.

Athletics 5, Mariners 1

Seattle – Dana Eveland made a smooth return to the majors, pitching shutout ball into the seventh inning and helping Oakland defeat Seattle. Eveland (8-8) had been sent down to Triple-A Sacramento earlier this month after going 0-3 with a 10.59 ERA in a four-start span.
