Evan Mielke, Lawrence, will have his Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Sunday at the Lawrence Jewish Community Center.
Mielke, 18, is a senior at Free State High School and the son of Jim and Diane Mielke.
During his Scouting career, he earned 31 merit badges, achieved the Ner Tamid religious award and became a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. He attended Camp Alexander near Lake George, Colo., during the summers of 2002, 2003 and 2004. He returned to Camp Alexander as a staff member during the summers of 2005, 2006 and 2008. He was the crew leader for his group when it went to Philmont Scout Ranch in 2007. His Eagle project involved a revitalization and addition of benches to a butterfly garden at Langston Hughes School.
¢ Cub Scout Pack 3057, chartered to the St. John Catholic School PTO, had a busy summer.
On May 31, Scouts, leaders and family members went fishing at Camp Bromelsick. Scouts attending were Ben Witte, Eli Witte, Sam Witte, Donovan Tabares, John Milburn, Reed Pfeifer and Tyler Self. Leaders and other family members attending were Eric Self, Jean Pfeifer, John Pfeifer, Dorian Witte, Bill Dunn, Diondre McCallister, Clayton Pfeifer and Jack Pfeifer.
From June 2-6, the Scouts attended the Pelathe District Day Camp at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Scouts attending were Brandon Bunting, Gabriel Magee, Aidan Schaplowsky, Alex Waite, Ben Witte, Sam Witte, John Anderson, Andrew Bireta, Michael Bramen, Joshua Burrichter, Sam Campbell, Noah Funk, Ryan Glogau, Ben Hill, Daniel Murray, Liam Rausch, Mark Smith, Jimmy Cooper, Stephen Cory, George Haff, Ethan Huslig, Jacob Lashley, Zachary Malsbury, John Milburn, Donovan Tabares, Ethan Anderson, Braden Augustine, Bradley Bunting, Jack Burrichter, Connor Gabrielson, Joe Loats, Christopher Nau, Zackary Nichol, Reed Pfeifer, Aaron Reed, Tyler Self, Luke Thonen, Andrew Wallen, Andrew Flynn, Xavier Murray and Eli Witte.

On July 12, the Scouts ran cars on a Pinewood Derby track in the Bly room at Holcomb Recreation Center. Scouts attending were Gabriel Magee, Alex Waite, Andrew Bireta, Michael Braman, Liam Rausch, John Milburn, Braden Augustine, Jack Burrichter, Zackary Nichol, Reed Pfeifer. Adults attending were John Milburn, Kim Augustine, Len Nichol and Jean Pfeifer.
Parents of the Webelos met to prepare for Camp Naish. Parents attending the camp meeting and event were Chris Anderson, Rich Bireta, Chip Waite, Larry Magee, Keith Braman, Mike Burrichter, Mike Campbell, Terry Schaplowsky and Darren Rausch.
From July 27- 29, Scouts and leaders attended Theodore Naish Reservation near Bonner Springs. Pack 3057 is planning an astronomy event today.
¢ On June 21, 34 members of Boy Scout Troop 59, chartered to the First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence, participated in a Scouting High Adventure. During the 10-day trek, the Scouts visited four national parks. Eleven adult leaders and 23 Scouts visited the Great Sand Dunes National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, Four Corners Monument and drove through Monument Valley. They spent five days canoeing on the Green River, out of Moab, Utah, which runs through Canyonlands National Park, and they also visited the Arches National Park on their return trip.
The group broke into four crews in Moab. Crews 1 and 2 canoed Labryrinth Canyon for 68 miles. Crews 3 and 4 canoed the Stillwater Canyon for 65 miles.
Members of Crew 1: Tristan Alfie, Henry Chapman, Matthew Day, James Fredrickson, Liam Inbody and Ryan Marienau. Adult leaders were Ed Day, Kevin Fredrickson and Fred Inbody.
Members of Crew 2: Philip Gabler, Chase Low, Colin Phillips, Ben Seybert, Josh Seybert and Reid Williams. Adult leaders were Paul Gabler, Kirk Low and Russ Seybert.
Members of Crew 3: Chip Allen, John Fredrickson, Alex Kong, Derrick Weishaar and Eric Yowell. Adult leaders were Mark Workman, high adventure trip coordinator, Patty Allen and Jon Standing.
Members of Crew 4: Connor Caldwell, Riley King, Trevor Leslie, Scott Ragan, Adam Wangler and James Windholz. Adult leaders were Tim Windholz and Ron King.
The crews practiced “leave no trace” camping skills. Everything that went into the park was carried back out of the park. The Scouts and leaders practiced canoeing and “leave no trace” skills during extra campouts coordinated and conducted by Mark Workman for four months.
To qualify for a High Adventure, a Scout must be 14 years old and have attained the first-class rank.
