County Commission OKs road work list

Douglas County commissioners Wednesday evening approved a proposed list of area highway improvement projects, but they invited city commissioners to add public transit needs to the list for consideration next week.

The list of proposals includes a $202 million project to finish the South Lawrence Trafficway along the 32nd Street alignment. The total list was taken from Transportation 2030, a long-range plan developed for the region.

The state has asked cities and counties to pass joint resolutions to help identify highway needs as the state develops its next long-term plan for roads.

Commissioner Charles Jones said the list of area projects was not visionary enough and did not account for possible future changes in transportation systems based on higher fuel prices and changes in consumption.

Commissioners did vote 3-0 to approve the resolution, but they said they would accept an amendment from the city, such as to illustrate public transit needs.
