Kansas City, Mo. The Kansas City Royals have signed veteran free-agent pitcher Kip Wells for the rest of 2008. The 31-year-old Wells started the season as the Colorado Rockies' opening day starter, but he was eventually demoted to the bullpen. The Rockies designated Wells for assignment last week. The right-handed pitcher has a 1-2 record with a 5.27 earned-run average in 15 appearances. He's 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA coming out of the bullpen, which is where the Royals expect to use him. Wells is a 10-year veteran.
