Celebrities seek country makeover

What would happen if you set “The Surreal Life” in a Cracker Barrel restaurant? Something not far from “Gone Country” (7 p.m. and 9 p.m., CMT), now entering its second season. “Gone” takes a cast of curious and not-too-busy-right-now celebrities and determines who has the talent and grit to become a country star. John Rich returns as host and musical mentor.

This year’s competitors include Sean Young, best known for her performances in “Blade Runner” and “No Way Out” and a series of strange personal episodes that helped usher her off Hollywood’s A, B and C-lists. Other would-be country stars include Mikalah Gordon, a dreadful “American Idol” contestant, and Lorenzo Lamas, who once served as a judge on the ABC reality show “Are You Hot?” – among the worst shows ever broadcast. Former Jackson 5 member Jermaine Jackson appears, as does “Flashdance” singer Irene Cara. Chris Kirkpatrick of ‘N Sync participates.

As if there weren’t enough celebrities in the recycling bin, “Outsider Inn” (8 p.m., CMT) stars last year’s “Gone Country” personalities Maureen McCormick and Bobby Brown as inn-keepers at a place called Pigeon Manor in the Great Smokey Mountains. They should call the place the Has-Been Inn.

¢ If television had a truth-in-labeling law, the show “Celebrity Crises: 10 Most Shocking Mental Disorders” (8 p.m., E!) could be cited for contempt. This round-up includes celebrities’ bouts with eating disorders and Delta Burke’s penchant for hoarding. Apparently, the former “Designing Women” star had 27 storage units filled with stuff.

¢ “The Truth with Jeff Johnson” (10 p.m., BET) debuts tonight. Johnson will host investigative segments as well as one-on-one interview with a special emphasis on news that affects the black community.

¢ Robin Williams movies tend to be very good or very bad. Critics put the 2006 road-trip comedy “RV” (7 p.m. and 9 p.m., TNT) in the second category.

I’m confused by why this movie is airing on TNT, which is supposed to be the home to drama, and not on its sister station, TBS, which has branded itself as a comedy destination. Maybe they didn’t want “RV.”
