American League Roundup: Tigers avoid sweep by Jays

Tigers 5, Blue Jays 1

Detroit – Edgar Renteria hit a tiebreaking two-run double in Detroit’s five-run eighth inning, and the Tigers avoided a four-game sweep with a win over Toronto.

Armando Galarraga (11-4) pitched eight sharp innings for Detroit, allowing a run and six hits.

The Tigers struggled against Jesse Litsch, who tossed seven shutout innings and handed a 1-0 lead over to the Blue Jays bullpen. Litsch allowed four hits and walked two.

Jesse Carlson got the first out of the eighth before Jason Frasor walked Placido Polanco. Magglio Ordonez flied out, but Polanco advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Miguel Cabrera’s tying single.

Detroit loaded the bases on two more walks, one intentional, and Renteria hit a liner into left-center field to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Brandon Inge followed with a two-run single.

Rays 7, Athletics 6 (12)

Oakland, Calif. – Reliever Brad Ziegler’s record scoreless streak was ended by B.J. Upton, and Carlos Pena homered leading off the 12th to give Tampa Bay a victory over Oakland.

Ziegler started his career by not allowing a run in 39 consecutive shutout innings – including the eighth Thursday – to tie a 59-year-old major-league record for relievers. Upton hit an RBI double to give the Rays a 5-4 lead in the ninth.

Pena hit his 23rd homer of the season off Santiago Casilla (2-1), and Dioner Navarro added an RBI single as Tampa Bay moved to 26 games over .500 for the first time in franchise history. Jason Hammel (4-3) pitched 22â3 innings to earn the win for Tampa Bay, which lost closer Troy Percival to a sprained right knee.

Boston – David Ortiz hit a three-run homer to highlight a nine-run second.

Cleveland – Lou Montanez hit a tiebreaking double during an eight-run eighth.
