3 Japanese journalists detained in China

? Security authorities in Kuqa in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, on Sunday temporarily detained two Japanese reporters and a Japanese cameraman who entered Kuqa to report on the series of terrorist bombings that occurred there earlier in the day, according to sources.

The three were taken to a local police station and kept there for about 90 minutes during the night, the sources said.

The three detainees, who were not reported to have been mistreated during their detention, are Toshu Noguchi, 44, a Sankei Shimbun China general office reporter; Hidemi Shiroyama, 38, a Jiji Press reporter; and Hideo Yamazaki, 42, a Jiji Press cameraman.

According to the Sankei Shimbun newspaper, Noguchi called the paper’s foreign news department during the night and said, “I’m now being taken away by the Chinese security authorities.”
